The topic of Identity can be a complicated one for adoptees. There are many different experiences people have with adoption. Some of us are glad we were adopted, some feel they were taken away from their birth culture, some experience feelings of abandonment, struggle with feelings of rejection, and many other questions around identity. For many of us we look Guatemalan but we do not speak Spanish or know Guatemalan culture. We aim to help adoptees find their identity.
We do this by providing adoptees with opportunities and experiences to make meaningful connections to our roots and culture. We provide a space for adoptees to speak about Guatemala, thoughts or questions about adoption. We think that a meaningful connection to Guatemalan culture is the best way to discover what it means to be Guatemalan. We have hosted cooking classes and demos on Guatemalan cuisine, classes on Maya culture, had Guatemalan athletes, academics, entrepreneurs, actors, artists and musicians to speak about Guatemala.
For many adoptees we feel that we have grown-up stuck between two worlds. We hope through our programs we can help Guatemalan adoptees find their identity and find a place where we know we belong.
